  • Music

A quality music education engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increases their confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to a wide genre of music.

This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

    Curriculum Music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

At Hady Primary School, music is a valued and integral part of our curriculum. We provide timetabled music lessons for all year groups, ensuring consistent and progressive coverage across the school. Our bespoke music scheme is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Music and is carefully designed to make meaningful links with wider curriculum topics, enriching cross-curricular learning wherever possible.

Pupil progress in music is evident through regular observations, book looks, and pupil voice. Children confidently recall and use key musical vocabulary, demonstrating a deepening understanding of musical concepts over time. Observations show that all pupils, including those with SEND, are fully engaged and actively participating in lessons.

We are well-resourced with a wide range of musical instruments, which are used effectively to support composition, performance, and understanding of musical elements. Music appreciation is a key component of our curriculum, and children are exposed to a diverse range of musical genres and styles. These are regularly listened to, discussed, and evaluated as part of lessons.

Our teaching staff are confident in delivering music lessons and in supporting children to listen actively and appreciate different musical forms. Through high-quality teaching and a well-structured curriculum, we aim to foster a love of music and develop musical skills and knowledge in every child.

    Co-Curricular Music and Musical Experiences

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum. It also covers all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

At Hady Primary School, we are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities for pupils to develop their musical talents and interests beyond the classroom. Singing assemblies are held regularly, particularly in the lead-up to musical events, where children learn and perform a variety of songs. These sessions are always met with confidence and enthusiasm from pupils.

All lower Key Stage 2 children take part in weekly whole-class ukulele lessons, delivered by specialist teachers from the Derbyshire Music Hub. These lessons culminate in performances where pupils proudly showcase their learning to both the school and their families.

We also offer peripatetic music lessons, with a specialist teacher providing one-to-one and small group guitar tuition for pupils across different year groups. This ensures that children with a particular interest in music have the opportunity to pursue it further.

Our school choir, made up of around 40 Key Stage 2 pupils, has a long-standing tradition of participating in the 'Got to Sing' event. The choir also performs regularly at school events such as our summer and Christmas fairs, bringing the school community together through music.

Throughout the year, all pupils are given the chance to take part in performances, including singing Christmas carols at Chesterfield Parish Church — a highlight of our school calendar that celebrates both musical achievement and community spirit.

    In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

At Hady Primary School, we are committed to continually improving and enriching our music provision. In the coming years, we will build on our existing successes by regularly reviewing and adapting our curriculum in response to updates to the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum. This ensures our provision remains current, ambitious, and aligned with national expectations.

We will continue to grow and strengthen our school choir, providing more frequent opportunities for pupils to perform both within school and in the wider community, including collaborations with our local music hub. We are also keen to increase pupils’ exposure to live music, helping to inspire and broaden their musical experiences.

As part of our ongoing development, we aim to take a more creative and consistent approach to capturing pupil progress and pupil voice in music, ensuring it reflects the breadth of experiences and skills gained across the curriculum.

Looking ahead, we aspire to further expand our pupils’ musical horizons by introducing a wider range of genres, developing their musical vocabulary, and offering opportunities to explore a more diverse selection of instruments. Through this, we aim to foster a life-long appreciation and enjoyment of music in all our pupils.
